The Seal Is Not a Ration

He could teach this. He has taught this, more than once, and taught it well.

The sealing. Ephesians chapter one, the moment of belief, the Spirit given as a seal and a down payment, permanent, not conditional on performance, not lost on a bad Thursday. He can walk anybody through it in twenty minutes with the text open, and he has settled a lot of frightened people with it over the years, and every word of it is true.

He is fifty three.

And what nobody at that table knows is that he has not asked God for anything of the kind in about fifteen years, and that his own reasoning is what stopped him.

The chain runs like this, and he has never written it down because writing it down would expose it.

If the Spirit was given permanently at belief, and if He does not come and go, then asking to be filled would imply He had left. Which He has not. Therefore the asking would be, at best, confused, and at worst a quiet insult to the finished work.

So the request never gets made. Not because he doubts. Because he is careful, and because the careful reading he learned at twenty six closed a door he did not notice closing.

Underneath, in a place he does not go often, there is a dry patch that has been widening for years.

The sentence, which would cost him something to say in front of anybody who has heard him teach, is: I know exactly why I should not ask, and I am running on nothing.

You may have your own good doctrine. The true thing that quietly became a locked door.

Hold the sealing exactly where he has it

Nothing here asks him to give up an inch of what he knows. That has to be said first, because a man like this will not move a step if he suspects he is being asked to be less careful.

The verse says what he says it says.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.Ephesians 1:13

Sealed. Past tense, done, at belief, on the strength of Christ and not of the believer. He is right, and the people he settled with it over the years were genuinely settled, and none of that is being revised.

The question is only whether that sentence is about the same thing as the filling.

You are standing on something completely secure, and Ephesians 1:13 puts the sealing in the past tense at the point of belief with nothing left hanging on the man, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a settled doctrine and keeps it settled while opening something beside it.

A seal and a filling are two different words

Consider how the letter itself behaves, because Paul is the one who wrote both sentences and he did not think they collided.

The same man who wrote chapter one verse thirteen wrote chapter five verse eighteen, and in the second one he tells the same church, in the imperative, to be filled with the Spirit. Continuously. As an ongoing thing.

If sealing and filling were the same category, that instruction would be nonsense. Nobody can command people to keep on receiving something already described as received permanently and completely.

So they are not the same category. A seal is about ownership and security. A filling is about supply. One answers the question of whose he is. The other answers the question of what is running through him this week, and the second question is the one he has been refusing to ask for fifteen years on the authority of an answer to the first.

You have been answering the wrong question with the right verse, because the written word puts the sealing in the past tense and the filling in the ongoing tense in the same short letter, and the Spirit of God is what turns a point of order into a door swinging open.

And notice the second image in verse fourteen, immediately after the seal: a down payment. A deposit is by definition not the whole sum. Paul chooses a word whose entire meaning is that more is coming.

You were given a deposit and not a settlement, and Ephesians 1 names the Spirit as the earnest of an inheritance rather than the whole of it, and the same Spirit who is the down payment on it is the one who fills.

Carefulness is not the problem

Now the part he would resist, which is any suggestion that his precision has been a fault.

It has not been. Precision has served him and served a lot of other people. The men and women he steadied with that chapter were not steadied by enthusiasm, they were steadied by a text handled properly, and that is a real ministry.

What happened is narrower and it happens to careful people specifically. He drew a correct line and then treated everything on the other side of it as settled too. That is not carelessness. It is the characteristic error of a man who is good at boundaries.

You were right about the line and it never fenced this in, because Ephesians 1:13 and the command to be filled sit in the same letter without contradiction, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who makes that a relief rather than a correction to a man who has taught it well.
