Still Quiet, Still Precise

He asked in March. Alone, in his own kitchen, out loud, exactly the way somebody had described to him, and he meant every word of it.

It is June.

He is still quiet. He is still the man who lines the cups up on the shelf with the handles the same way, which his sister has teased him about since he was nine. He still needs about forty minutes on his own after any gathering of more than four people, and he still cannot tell a joke, and he still finds small talk genuinely effortful in a way that other people appear not to.

Nothing about him has altered in any respect he can identify.

He has been careful about how he has thought about this. He is not a dramatic man and he has not concluded that nothing happened. What he has done, which is worse and quieter, is stop mentioning it.

He asked in March and told two people. Neither has asked him about it since, which he does not hold against them. And when he thinks about the asking now, three months on, what he feels is a kind of embarrassment, because there is nothing to report and he half suspects that a person who had really received something would have something to report.

The sentence, unsaid: if this had taken, surely I would be different by now.

You may know that June. The asking honestly made, and everything about you exactly where it was.

The making was not provisional

There is a line everybody knows and it is usually read as encouragement, and it is actually a claim about intent.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works.Psalm 139:14

Read the verb. Made. Past tense, completed, and the subject doing it is God, and the psalm around it is full of the details of the making: the forming in secret, the substance seen when it was unformed, the days written before there were any.

That is not a psalm about potential. It is a psalm about deliberate work already done, and the person praising is praising the finished object rather than a promising draft.

You are somebody who has already been made on purpose, and Psalm 139:14 puts the making in the past tense as completed and deliberate work, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who takes a psalm about being formed in secret and lands it on a man lining cups up on a shelf in June.

And notice what the psalm does not contain. There is no clause anywhere in it where the maker expresses a wish that this particular person had come out differently.

Filling is not replacing

Consider the two words and what each of them actually does, because he has quietly swapped one for the other.

To fill is to put something into a container. The container is required. Its shape determines the shape of what is in it, and nobody fills a vessel by first getting rid of the vessel.

To replace is a different operation entirely, and it is the one he has been unconsciously expecting, and it is not the word Scripture uses anywhere about this.

He is the vessel. Quiet, precise, needing forty minutes afterward, no good at jokes. Every one of those is part of the shape of the thing being filled rather than an obstruction in it.

And a vessel is not incidental to what it holds. A jug and a bowl and a lamp all hold oil and none of them is a defective version of the others, and what each one can do with the oil depends entirely on the shape it was made in. A quiet, precise, forty minute man does something with what he is given that a loud one cannot do, and the church he sits in has generally worked that out about him long before he has.

You are the container and not the obstruction, because the written word uses filling throughout and never once uses replacing, and the Holy Spirit is what turns a distinction between two verbs into three months making sense.

And notice how specific the psalm gets about the making. Reins, and covering in the womb, and a substance seen while it was still unformed. Whoever wrote that was not describing a general human template. He was describing a particular person being assembled with attention.

You were assembled with attention rather than issued from a template, and Psalm 139 spends its whole middle on the specificity of one person's making, and the same Spirit who was there for that is the one who fills.

Three months is not a report

Now the thing that has actually been happening in June, which is an inference he made without noticing.

He assumed a filling would produce an observable difference in temperament within a defined period, and when it did not he began quietly gathering that as evidence. There is no verse anywhere that offers that expectation, and no timescale attached to anything, and no list of the traits that a filled person is supposed to no longer have.

The embarrassment is real and it came from somewhere, but it did not come from Scripture. It came from the shape of the accounts people tell, which are always about the things that changed and never about the man who is still quiet.

You were never given a period in which to become somebody else, because the written word attaches no timescale and no personality specification to any of this, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a relief rather than one more thing for a precise man to examine.
