Maybe It Was Just the Music

She was seventeen. It was the last night of a week away, the lights were low, the band was good and knew exactly what it was doing, and about four hundred people were singing the same eight words for the fourth time.

And something happened to her that she could not describe on the bus home and cannot describe now.

She is thirty one. She has a degree in something rigorous and a job that requires her to be suspicious of correlations for a living, and about two years ago she began, very quietly, to reclassify that night.

The argument runs like this and it is a decent argument. Dim lighting, repetitive music, group singing, sleep deprivation and a week of emotional buildup will reliably produce a strong feeling in a seventeen year old. There is a whole literature on it. She has read some of it. And the feeling wore off, eventually, over a decade, which is exactly what feelings do.

So the most economical explanation is that what happened to her at seventeen was a room working correctly on a tired teenager.

She has never said this out loud to anybody who was there. It would hurt two people she loves and it would start a conversation she does not want.

What she also has not said, and this is the part that matters, is that the economical explanation does not sit right. Not because she wants it not to. Because there is a piece of that night the explanation does not cover, and she cannot make the piece go away by being rigorous at it.

The sentence, unspoken, goes something like: if it was only the room, then I have been building on a room for fourteen years.

You may have your own last night of a week away. The thing you have quietly downgraded because it faded.

A feeling and a witness are not the same event

Be careful here, because there is a lazy answer available in both directions and neither one is honest.

The lazy religious answer says her analysis is faithless and she should stop thinking. That is contemptible, and it also loses the argument, because she is right about the room. Dim lighting and repetition do produce feelings. Anybody who denies that has not been in many rooms.

The lazy skeptical answer says that because the room can produce a feeling, the feeling is all there was. That is a different mistake and it is the one she is currently making. It assumes that explaining one layer explains the whole stack.

There is a line in Romans that names a second thing going on underneath a feeling, and names it precisely.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.Romans 8:16

Read what that describes. Not an emotion. A testimony. Two parties agreeing about a fact, which is a legal picture rather than an atmospheric one.

You are being told there is a second witness in the room, and Romans 8:16 describes the Spirit of God testifying alongside a person's own spirit rather than stirring their feelings, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who takes a line from a difficult letter and lands it on a woman who has spent two years quietly downgrading her own history.

What a witness does that a feeling cannot

Consider the difference in what the two things actually deliver.

A feeling delivers a state. It is present while it is present and absent when it is not, and its absence is not evidence of anything except that a state has changed.

A witness delivers a fact. When somebody testifies to something, the testimony is not undone by the witness going home. The fact stands whether or not anybody in the room currently feels anything about it.

That distinction is the whole of her problem, because she has been measuring a fact by whether a state persisted. Of course the state did not persist. States do not.

You have been auditing a testimony with an instrument built for feelings, because the written word calls what happens between His Spirit and a person a witness rather than an experience, and the Holy Spirit is what turns a distinction she can follow into a thing she can stand on.

And notice the content of the testimony. It is not that she is impressive or that the night was significant. It is that she belongs to God, which is the sort of fact that does not fluctuate with lighting.

You were being told who you belong to and not how to feel, and Romans 8 makes the subject of the witness a relationship rather than a sensation, and the same Spirit who wrote that through a very rigorous man is the one making it land on a rigorous woman.

The room was probably doing exactly what she thinks

Now the surprising part, which is that she does not have to give up her analysis at all.

The room was almost certainly doing what she says it was doing. Low lights, good band, four hundred voices, four repetitions. That is a machine for producing feeling and it produced feeling, and there is nothing sinister in it: God has never objected to a person being moved, and the whole book of Psalms is set to music on purpose.

The mistake was never her observation. It was the inference that a full explanation of the atmosphere is a full explanation of the night.

You were right about the room and wrong about what that settles, because Romans 8:16 puts a second and different event in the same moment, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a relief for somebody who did not want to choose between being honest and being a believer.
