The Anniversary Nobody Knows

This message is for the woman who marks the same date every year on her own and has begun to dread it, because each year the distance between then and now is a year longer

The fourteenth of March.

She does not tell anybody. Her husband does not know, which she has thought about and decided is not dishonest, only private, in the way a person might not mention a scar.

What she does on the fourteenth is nothing visible. She gets up a little earlier. She takes her tea to the same chair. And she sits and she remembers a morning eight years ago when she was in that same chair and something came into the room and into her, and she has never had language for it and she stopped trying to find any about four years back.

The first year, the remembering was warm. It was like reading a letter.

Somewhere around year four it changed. She noticed it that March and did not examine it. By year six she was aware of it in advance, a few days out, and this last March she caught herself hoping it would be busy enough at work that the day would just go past.

The reason is not complicated once she lets herself look at it. Every year, the date does arithmetic. It says: eight years. And eight years is a longer gap than seven, and the whole shape of the sitting has become a measurement of distance from something rather than a nearness to anything.

She has begun, in a way she would not say out loud, to dread her own best morning.

The sentence would come out like this: every year that chair tells me how far back it was.

You may have your own fourteenth of March. The private date that has started counting the wrong direction.

Mercies are not issued annually

There is a line in the middle of the saddest book in the Bible that settles the frequency question, and the setting is worth knowing before the line.

Lamentations is a man sitting in a ruined city writing five poems about it, and he is not being brave. He says he has been walled in, that his strength is gone, that he has forgotten what good is. It is genuinely bleak, and then in the middle of chapter three the thing turns for four verses and then goes back to being bleak again.

Here is the turn.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:23

Every morning. Not annually. Not at the anniversary of a good day. A supply described as arriving on a daily cycle, in a book written by a man surrounded by rubble.

You are living under a supply that is issued daily, and Lamentations 3:23 sets the frequency at every morning rather than at any date on a calendar, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a line written in a ruined city and lands it on a woman in a chair with a cup of tea.

An anniversary measures distance

Consider what an anniversary is for, structurally, because she has been using one for something it cannot do.

An anniversary marks. It fixes a point and then, every year, reports how far the distance has grown since. That is exactly what a wedding date is supposed to do and exactly what she does not want here, and she has been feeling the difference for four years without naming it.

Think about how the two instruments actually behave. A marker is fixed and the person keeps moving, so the reading gets larger no matter what kind of year it was. A spring stays where it is and so does the person, and the reading is the same on a good Tuesday as on a bad one because there is no reading. One of those is a way of remembering and the other is a way of drinking, and she has been trying to drink out of a milestone.

Anniversaries always count outward. That is not a defect in the fourteenth of March. It is what the instrument does.

You have been asking a marker to do the work of a spring, because the written word puts the renewal on a morning cycle and never once ties it to the date of a previous morning, and the Holy Spirit is what turns that from an observation into a change she can make on a Tuesday.

And notice how ordinary the word morning is in that verse. Not a special morning. Not a morning she has prepared for. The most repetitive, least remarkable unit of time there is, chosen deliberately by a man who had nothing left and was watching the sun come up over a wrecked town anyway.

You are already inside the frequency He named, and Lamentations 3 gives the man in the rubble a daily supply rather than an occasion, and the same Spirit who moved him to write four bright verses in the middle of a lament moves in an ordinary kitchen.

The chair was never doing anything wrong

Now the thing she would feel guilty about if somebody named it, which is the dread.

There is nothing to feel guilty about. The dread is not ingratitude and it is not a sign that she has spoiled a good memory. It is the completely predictable result of using a fixed point as a supply, and anybody who did that for eight years would end up dreading the measurement.

She was not warned. Nobody says out loud that a good morning can quietly become a ruler. And the fact that she has kept coming back to that chair for eight years is not a fault, it is faithfulness pointed at the only thing she had.

You were faithful to the only landmark you had, because Lamentations 3:23 corrects a frequency and not a heart, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who makes that a kindness rather than one more thing for a private woman to be quiet about.

The breakthrough

So let us settle it here, wherever you happen to be sitting this morning.

Right now, as you read this, you are inside a mercy that arrived today and not eight years ago, and Lamentations 3:23 says they are new every morning and puts great faithfulness in the same breath as a ruined city, and the Spirit of God is laying that across eight years of one chair while you read.

And you have a supply with no date attached to it, because the written word issues it daily to a man with nothing left, and it is His Spirit who makes that a fact about an ordinary Tuesday rather than a lovely verse for a card.

So the fourteenth can go back to being what it was, which is a genuinely good morning eight years ago in a particular chair, and stop being the instrument she measures herself with.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at ordinary volume, sitting where you are. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is being got up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and nothing about this is being scored.

  1. Date I keep coming back to, you are not a measuring line. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and puts the whole supply on a daily cycle, so eight years of distance was never the reading that mattered. I am filled again by God today.
  2. Dread that arrives a few days out, you have no place at this table. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where a man in a ruined city was given something new before breakfast. I am asking to be filled this morning.
  3. Father, You said new every morning, and I have been saving a chair for a single date each year. Lamentations 3 is Your own word and Your Spirit is the one carrying it into an ordinary kitchen on an ordinary Tuesday. Fill me now, and the fourteenth can just be a good memory.
