She can give you the date. Not the year and month, the date, and the day of the week, and roughly the hour.
It was a Thursday. There were maybe forty people in a room that held sixty. Somebody was playing badly and had stopped even trying to lead anything, and she was standing at the end of the fourth row with her hands at her sides, and something came down on that room and she went to her knees and she was there a long time.
Eleven years ago.
Since then she has prayed about it more than about anything else in her life. She could not tell you how many times. Hundreds. And the prayer, when she is honest with herself, has always been exactly the same prayer, and she said it again three nights ago in her own kitchen at eleven at night.
Do it like You did it then.
That is the whole request. She has never noticed that it is the whole request, and she would probably argue if you said so, and then she would go quiet and think about it.
Because look at what she is asking for. Not the Spirit of God. A rerun. A specific Thursday, reproduced, with the badly played music and the forty people in the sixty seat room and the particular way it felt in her chest.
She is not asking Him for anything today. She has been asking Him for a night in the past for eleven years, and she has been reading the silence as a refusal.
The sentence she has never quite said is this one: if He does not do it the way He did it, then He has not done it.
You may have your own Thursday. The one you keep handing back to Him as a specification.
Nobody in the book got a repeat
Read the fillings in Acts side by side and something obvious jumps out that nobody mentions.
They do not match.
Chapter two has wind and fire and a public spectacle in the middle of a feast. Chapter four has a building shaking, and no fire at all, and the outcome is that a frightened group starts speaking plainly. Chapter eight is quiet. Chapter nine happens to a blind man in a house on a back street with one nervous person present.
And then chapter ten, which is the strangest one, because it happens in the middle of somebody talking, before he has finished his sentence, to a room of people who were not even supposed to be candidates.
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.Acts 10:44
Nobody prayed for it. Nobody knelt. Nobody had a Thursday to compare it to. The preacher did not get to the end of his point.
You are dealing with a God who has not repeated Himself once in the whole book, and Acts 10:44 has the Spirit arriving mid sentence in a way nobody in the room had a category for, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an interruption in a soldier's house and lands it on a woman standing in her kitchen at eleven at night.
A specification is not a request
Consider the difference between asking and specifying, because she has been doing one and calling it the other.
A request names the need and leaves the answer open. A specification names the need and also names the form the answer has to take, and then measures whatever arrives against the drawing.
For eleven years she has been submitting a drawing. And here is what that does, which is the cruel part and which is nobody's fault: it makes her unable to receive anything that does not match, and it makes silence the only possible reading of an answer that came differently.
You have been handing Him a drawing when He asked for a mouth, because the written word never once records the Spirit arriving twice the same way, and the Holy Spirit is what turns that from an interesting pattern into the moment a woman stops describing and starts asking.
And notice how little the people in chapter ten contributed. They were listening. That is the entire recorded human input. No posture, no words, nothing prepared, nothing that could be repeated by anybody as a technique.
You were never required to set anything up, and Acts 10 has the whole thing land on people who had no framework for it and no part in arranging it, and the same Spirit who fell in that house does not need a fourth row.
The Thursday was not the standard
Now the thing that has been quietly hurting her, which is the suspicion that the silence means He has closed something.
There is no closure in that book anywhere. What there is, over and over, is God arriving in a form the people present had not pictured, which means the eleven years of silence may not be silence at all. It may be eleven years of a woman waiting at one door in a house with several.
That is not a rebuke. She was not told this. Nobody hands out a warning that says do not turn your best night into a template, and a night like that one is exactly the sort of thing a person builds a life around.
You were not wrong to treasure it, because Acts 10:44 never suggests that a previous encounter is the measure of a later one, and it is His Spirit who makes that a relief for a woman who has been holding a drawing for over a decade.
So let us settle this here, wherever you happen to be standing.
Right now, as you read this, you are free to ask for today instead of for a Thursday, and Acts 10:44 has the Holy Spirit falling in the middle of a sentence on people with no template at all, and the Spirit of God is laying that across eleven years of one request while you read it.
And you have never been refused, because the written word shows God arriving in forms nobody had drawn and never once treats a previous encounter as the pattern He is obliged to repeat, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who makes that a fact about a kitchen rather than an observation about Acts.
So the Thursday can go back to being what it was, which is a genuinely good night eleven years ago in a room with bad music in it, and not the drawing she has been submitting ever since.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at ordinary volume, standing right where you are. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is being got up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and none of this is being scored.
- Thursday night eleven years ago, you are not the shape of the answer. Acts 10:44 has the Holy Spirit falling in the middle of a sentence on people with no template at all, so the form of an old night was never the measure of a new one. I am filled again by God today.
- Silence I have been reading as a refusal, you have no standing in this kitchen. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where God has not once repeated Himself and has not once shut a door. I am asking for today.
- Father, You arrived in that house before the preacher finished his point, and I have been handing You a drawing for eleven years. Acts 10 is Your own record and Your Spirit is the one carrying it into a kitchen at eleven at night. Fill me now, and I am not going to tell You how.
