Coat On at the Wedding

He kept his coat on for the entire reception and nobody said anything about it.

It was not cold. He knew it was not cold. It is a thing he does, and he has done it since he was young, and if you asked him he would say something about the car being far away.

His niece got married and it was a good day and he was genuinely glad. He talked to five or six people properly. He is not a man who hides at these things and he would object to that reading.

He simply did not take the coat off, and he sat at the edge of it, and at about nine o'clock the dancing started and he watched from a table with a glass he was not drinking.

He is fifty five.

Here is what he has wanted for about twelve years and has never told anybody.

He wants to be filled with the Holy Spirit. He has read enough to know what he is asking for and it is not vague. Something in him has been leaning toward it since a conversation on a building site in his forties, and he has never once opened his mouth about it.

Because every time he gets near it, the same picture arrives. Himself, in a room, not in charge of himself, in front of people who know him.

The sentence, unsaid: I do not know how to want this without being frightened of it.

You may know that coat. The thing you keep on, and the reason nobody has ever asked you about it.

The verse names three things and none of them is a scene

There is a line in a letter from an old man to a frightened young one that describes what God gives, and it lists three items.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7

Read the list. Power. Love. A sound mind.

That last phrase is the one that matters here, and in the Greek it is a word about self mastery, about a mind that is sound and disciplined and in its right order. It is not a poetic flourish. It is one of the three things named.

Paul is not describing a person being taken over. He is describing a person being given power, and love, and their own mind working properly, all three at once, from the same source.

And the three are not a menu. He does not offer power to some and a sound mind to others, or suggest that a person receives one at the cost of another. It is one sentence about one giving, and whatever else a man might be afraid of, a mind in its right order is on the list of what arrives rather than on the list of what it costs.

You are being offered the exact thing you have been protecting, and 2 Timothy 1:7 puts a sound mind in the list of what God gives alongside power and love, and it is His Spirit who takes a line written to a nervous young man and lands it on somebody at the edge of a dance floor with a coat on.

Fear is what the verse rules out

Consider the first half, because the sentence is built as a contrast and the contrast is doing the work.

God hath not given us the spirit of fear. Whatever the arriving picture is, Paul has explicitly said it does not come from God. That is a strong claim and he makes it before he says anything else.

Which puts the twelve years in a different position. The thing that has stopped him is named in the verse, on the wrong side of the sentence, as something God did not hand out.

You have been held back by the one thing that verse rules out by name, because the written word puts fear on the excluded side and a sound mind on the given side, and the Spirit of God is what turns a contrast into something a man can act on in an ordinary room.

And notice who Timothy is. A young man Paul is writing to precisely because he is prone to hanging back, and the whole letter is about not being ashamed and not going quiet. Paul does not tell him to become somebody else. He reminds him what was already given.

You are being reminded rather than remade, and 2 Timothy 1 has Paul point at what a hesitant man already has, and the same Spirit named in that list is the one who fills.

Nothing has to happen

Now the practical thing, which will matter more tonight than the exegesis.

There is no room in this. Nothing in that verse or anywhere near it attaches a setting, a witness, a posture or a visible response to the transaction. The picture that arrives every time is a picture of a room, and he does not have to be in one.

He can do this in his own front room with the door shut and nobody in the house, and there is no version of that which is a lesser asking.

That is not a workaround and it is not a concession made to a difficult case. Every account anybody has ever handed him came with a room attached because rooms are where accounts come from, and the absence of a quiet version from the stories he has heard is a fact about which evenings get retold rather than a fact about how God fills anybody.

You have a way to do this with nothing at stake, because Scripture attaches no setting to the receiving at any point, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that the plain shape of the thing rather than a compromise.
