She turns the music up at the second light and she keeps it there.
It is not background. She sings. She has a whole route's worth of songs and she knows where the good part of each one falls relative to the exits, and by the time she comes off the highway she is usually two thirds of the way through something with the windows down.
Then she pulls in. And there is a moment, between the engine going off and the door opening, that she has been arranging her whole drive to shorten.
Four seconds, maybe. The music stops and the engine ticks and the porch light is on and she is sitting in her own driveway in complete silence.
That is the thing she cannot handle, and she could not tell you exactly why, and it has been going on since about March.
She has tried leaving the radio on while she gathers her bag. She has tried a podcast for the last mile so there is talking instead of singing, which is worse. Once she sat there with the engine running for eleven minutes because she could not make herself turn the key, and then she got annoyed with herself about the gas and went in.
Nobody would guess any of this. She is the loud one. She is the one who arrives and the room lifts, and she is not faking that, and she would be genuinely offended if you suggested she was.
What she has never said out loud is the sentence that sits in those four seconds. It arrives with the silence every single time: when there is nothing playing, there is nothing in me.
You may know the four seconds. The gap you have been arranging your day to be shorter.
The one place Scripture makes the filling a command
There is exactly one line in the letters where being filled is put as an instruction, and it is a strange one, and it will help her enormously once she sees what it is doing.
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.Ephesians 5:18
People usually read that as a warning about drinking. It is not, or not mainly. Look at the structure. It is a swap. Paul names one way of getting filled from outside and puts another one beside it, and the whole force of the sentence is in the contrast.
Because here is what wine and volume and every other outside filling have in common. They work. That is why anybody uses them. They genuinely change how a person feels, immediately, reliably, and then they stop, and the stopping is the whole problem.
He is not saying she is bad for turning the music up. He is saying there is a filling that does not have a four second cliff at the end of it.
You are not being scolded in that verse, and Ephesians 5:18 puts the two fillings side by side and offers her the better one rather than taking the first one away, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a line written to a city full of noise and lands it in a driveway with the engine ticking.
Keep on being filled
Now the grammar, because the grammar is the good news and almost nobody is told it.
Be filled in that sentence is not a one time instruction. The tense is continuous. It reads closer to keep on being filled, over and over, as an ongoing state rather than a single event, which means the thing she is afraid of, the running out, is written into the design.
She has been treating her own emptiness as evidence of a fault. Paul treats regular refilling as the normal Christian arrangement.
You have been reading a scheduled thing as a failure, because the written word puts that command in a tense that expects it to happen again and again, and the Holy Spirit is what turns a point of grammar into a weight coming off a woman's shoulders.
And notice the voice. It is passive. Nobody is told to fill themselves. She is told to be filled, which is something done to a person, and there is not one instruction anywhere in the sentence about how to generate it.
You are on the receiving end of that verb and not the working end, and Ephesians 5 asks her to be filled rather than to fill herself, and the same Spirit who moved a man to write it in prison is the one making it land in a parked car.
Loud is not the sin
Now the part she is braced for, because she has heard this sermon before and it usually ends with her being told to be quieter.
Nobody is telling her to be quieter. That is not in the verse and it is not what this is about. She is loud because God made her loud, and the room lifting when she walks into it is a gift she has been giving away for free for years.
What is being taken off her is a job the volume has been doing. It has been holding the four seconds shut. That is not a sin, it is a stopgap, and it stopped working somewhere in March because a stopgap is not a supply.
You were never wrong to sing the whole way home, because Ephesians 5:18 corrects a source and not a personality, and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who makes that a relief rather than one more thing to be quieter about.
So let us settle this here, wherever you are parked or sitting.
Right now, as you read this, you are the one that command is aimed at and it is aimed kindly, and Ephesians 5:18 sets one filling beside another and hands her the one that does not run out at the end of the song, and the Spirit of God is laying that over four seconds of silence while you read.
And you have a filling written in a tense that expects to happen again, because the written word says keep on being filled and never once treats the second asking as a repair, and it is His Spirit who makes that a fact about a driveway rather than a footnote about Greek.
So the drive can go back to being what it is, which is a woman who loves singing, singing, and the four seconds can go back to being four seconds.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at your own volume, sitting right where you are. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is being got up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and nothing here is being graded.
- Silence in the driveway, you are not the truth about me. Ephesians 5:18 sets one filling beside another and hands me the one that does not stop when the music does, so those four seconds were never a report on what is in me. I am filled by God today.
- Voice that arrives with the quiet, you have no seat in this car. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where an empty person is answered with a filling and never with an inspection. I am asking to be filled tonight.
- Father, You told us to keep on being filled, and You put it in a tense that expects me back. Ephesians 5 is Your own command and Your Spirit is the one carrying it into a driveway with the porch light on. Fill me now, and I am going to go in and turn the music on for the fun of it.
