Nine Good Days

There is a note on his phone he has never shown anybody. It is a list of start dates.

January the second. February the eleventh. The Monday after Easter. June, twice. September, when the schedule at work changed and the new shift pattern felt like a clean edge to begin on.

Each entry is the first day of a system. The alarm at five. The reading plan with the little checkboxes down the side. The fast, the one he did properly, three days with the phone shut in a drawer. The Saturday two hours north he paid for himself and told nobody about.

And here is the thing nobody believes when he tries to explain it. The systems work. They are not bad systems and he is not bad at them. The alarm at five is genuinely good. He is awake, the apartment is quiet, the coffee is hot, the words on the page actually go in instead of sliding off the surface of him. For about nine days he is a man being filled up.

Then the ninth day comes and something drains out of the floor of it.

Not dramatically. He does not fall into a hole. He wakes on the tenth morning and the whole apparatus has gone weightless, and he lies there doing arithmetic about how much sleep is left, and the day begins the way days began before he started.

He has done this enough times now to have opinions about it. He thinks the September attempt lasted eleven days, which he counts as his record. He thinks the fast was the strongest one and also the shortest, and he has a private theory about why that is, which he has never said out loud because saying it out loud would sound like an excuse.

What he cannot say to anybody at all is the sentence underneath the list. It goes: if none of it holds, then the container is the problem.

Not the method. Him. Something about the shape of him does not keep what gets poured in.

You will know your own version of the ninth day. The good week that ended without anybody doing anything wrong.

The systems were never the container

Start where the trouble actually is, because it is not where he thinks.

Every one of those methods is a way of arranging himself. The alarm arranges his morning. The plan arranges his attention. The fast arranges his appetite. All of them are good arrangements and none of them is a supply. You can build the finest cistern in the country and it holds exactly as much water as somebody pours into it.

So the ninth day is not a failure of character. It is arithmetic. Something arranged well without a supply behind it runs down at the speed it was always going to run down at, and the only surprise is that it took nine days rather than four.

And this is where the accusation has to come off, because it has been sitting on him for two years. You are not a leaking container, and Psalm 81:10 puts the filling entirely on God's side of the table, which means the thing he has been diagnosing in himself was never the diagnosis, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old line spoken to a whole nation land on one man doing arithmetic at five in the morning.

Look at how strangely that verse is built.

I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.Psalm 81:10

Two halves, and the credentials come first. Before God asks for anything He names what He has already done, and what He has already done is the largest rescue in the book. Then, on the strength of that, He asks for the smallest possible action. Not a discipline. Not a season of preparation. Open your mouth.

Open is not a technique

Consider what an open mouth actually is.

It is not a skill. Nobody trains for it. A baby does it on the first day of its life and does it correctly. It is the least impressive contribution available to a human being, and God names it as the whole of our side.

Which tells you what kind of transaction this is. If the required action had been pray for an hour, then hours would be the currency and he could be short of hours. If it had been be consistent for thirty days, consistency would be the currency and his ninth day would be a real disqualification. God chose the one action that cannot be done well or badly. You either open or you do not.

You have a part in this that is one second long, because the written word makes the asking the entire human contribution and the filling the entire divine one, and the Spirit of God is what turns that from a nice distinction into something a man can do while the coffee is still hot.

And notice the word wide. Not politely. Not proportionally. There is no suggestion anywhere in the sentence that a man should moderate his request to match his track record.

That is worth sitting with, because he has been moderating. Somewhere in the last two years he stopped asking for much. The requests got smaller as the list of start dates got longer, which felt like humility and was actually accounting. He has been quietly pricing his ask against his performance.

You are asking from a table where nothing is being priced, and Psalm 81 sets the whole invitation on the Exodus rather than on the asker, and it is His Spirit who keeps that from being a thing he agrees with and turns it into a thing he does.

Nothing about the ninth day is a barrier

Now take the conditions off, one at a time, because he has attached several and none of them belong to him.

He thinks he should be filled after a good stretch, not after a bad one. But God addresses that verse to a people who had just been described as not listening to Him at all. The invitation is issued into the middle of the failure, not after it has been cleaned up.

He thinks he needs to be somewhere for it. A quiet place, a long morning, ideally the retreat two hours north. But the verse names no location. It names a mouth, and he brought that with him.

He thinks he needs to feel something first, some warmth or readiness that would signal a green light. But nothing in the sentence mentions how he feels. A mouth opens the same whether the man is glad or flat.

And he thinks, underneath everything, that he should not need this again. That is the heaviest one and it is the one Psalm 81 has no patience with, because a mouth is not a vessel you fill once. It is a thing that opens, receives and opens again, and God built it that way on purpose.

You are welcome to ask again today with nothing behind you but nine days that ran out, which is exactly the ground the psalm sets the invitation on, and the same Spirit who carried it to a nation who had not been listening carries it into a kitchen this morning.
