The Fire Was for the Back Row

She was seventeen when she started wanting this and she has never stopped, and she has always seen it the same way.

She is not proud of the picture and she has never described it to anybody. In it she is somewhere near the front. Not necessarily on a stage, but somewhere that people can see, and something is happening through her that the room knows about.

She is forty six now. Nothing like that has ever happened and she has stopped expecting it to and she has not stopped asking.

Here is what she has also never described.

There is a woman who comes in late most weeks and sits in the second from last row on the left and leaves during the last song. Nobody knows her name and she has been doing this for about seven months. She is somewhere in her sixties and she sits with her coat on.

Three separate times this year something in the room has gone quiet for her while she has been looking at that woman. Not a voice. Nothing she could describe to anybody without it sounding like a claim. A kind of narrowing, where the whole hall goes soft and there is one person in focus.

Every single time she has thought, immediately and automatically: that is not it. That is just me noticing somebody sad.

The sentence, unsaid: I have been asking for twenty nine years and I have been declining the thing that keeps happening.

You may know that narrowing. The thing that keeps arriving in a shape you have already ruled out.

The one man who says it out loud

There is a prophet who makes an explicit claim about being full of the Spirit, and what he says it is for is not what anybody would design.

But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.Micah 3:8

Read the purpose clause at the end. That is what the power is for. To say a true and unwelcome thing to people who did not want to hear it.

That is the job. Not a crowd. Not a room that knows. Micah is standing among professional prophets who were telling everybody what they wanted to hear, and the power he claims is the power to say the other thing.

You are looking at the one man who names his own filling and names its job, and Micah 3:8 attaches being full of power by the Spirit to a task nobody in that country wanted done, and it is His Spirit who takes a claim made by an unpopular prophet and lands it on a woman looking at the second from last row.

Power that does not look like power

Consider what that means for the shape she has been waiting for.

If the filling is for what a room can see, Micah is a badly written verse, because what Micah did was mostly unpopular and largely ignored in his own lifetime, and the book that carries his name is seven chapters long and sits between two others most people skip.

The power in that sentence is not the power to make something visible happen. It is the power to do a specific difficult thing that was assigned to him and that almost nobody thanked him for.

That is a hard thing to hear at forty six and it is also, on inspection, an enormous relief. A picture that has not arrived in twenty nine years is a heavy object to keep carrying. A job that has an address and a row number is something a person can actually do this week, and doing it requires nothing whatever from a room.

You have been picturing an outcome where Scripture describes an assignment, because the written word attaches the fullness to a job rather than to a scene, and the Holy Spirit is what turns that from a correction into a place her twenty nine years can finally land.

And notice the word truly at the start. Micah says it in contrast to the other prophets, and the contrast is not about volume. It is about content. He is not claiming to be louder than them. He is claiming to have something they do not, which is the ability to say the thing that was actually needed.

You are being offered the ability to do a specific thing rather than to produce an effect, and Micah 3 puts the fullness underneath a task, and the same Spirit who filled that man is the one who fills.

The wanting was never wrong

Now the part that has to be handled carefully, because there is a cheap version of this and it would be cruel.

The cheap version says she wanted the wrong thing and should be ashamed of the picture. She should not. A seventeen year old who wants God to do something enormous through her has not sinned; she has wanted the right person to do the right kind of thing and has furnished the picture with what she had available at seventeen.

Twenty nine years of asking is not twenty nine years of wanting the wrong thing. It is twenty nine years of hunger with a photograph attached, and only the photograph is being taken away.

And nothing in this says the picture could never happen. Some people are put in front of rooms and it is genuinely God who does it. The point is narrower and more useful: a filling has never once been withheld from anybody because their life did not produce that particular scene, and a woman who has been given a narrowing three times this year has not been ignored for twenty nine.

You were never wrong to want it, because Micah 3:8 corrects a picture and not an appetite, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that a relief rather than a rebuke to a woman who has been faithful about this since she was a girl.
